The surgeon has an entire team assisting him in the operating room, the team takes care of the preparation and monitoring tasks so that the surgeon can focus on operating. Apart from having an in-depth medical knowledge, the other skills that a surgeon requires are dexterity, precision and stamina. Some procedures can be really tedious and require long hours.

All surgeons develop core knowledge of anatomy, physiology, metabolism, immunology, pathology, wound healing, shock and resuscitation, intensive care, and more. But the complexities of the human body require more specific study, which is why there are specific surgical specialties physicians can devote their careers to.

Surgeons offer consultations with patients prior to their procedures, however, and may have their staff, or referred professionals, take diagnostic data from patients. The surgeon will review and analyze the data and imagery to determine how to best proceed when the operation begins.Surgeons do not perform routine physical examinations or other duties generally relegated to general practitioners. They do, however, work with patients.
