Adalaj Stepwell

The Adalaj Stepwell is a water well and temple complex situated in the town of Adalaj, about 18 kilometres from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India. The step-well was commissioned by Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty and built in 1397 during the period of Sultan Muzaffar II.

The well consists largely of an intricately carved single subterranean level deep enough to walk through. The carvings include delicate lattices and screens forming geometric patterns, as well as animals such as peacocks, elephants and tigers. The exterior walls are carved with niches which once housed statues, but most of the idol statues have been stolen or destroyed over time.
