How to Become a Cashier?

The Cashier will be responsible for taking the customers’ orders and payments, giving them back any change they are due, processing their payments, and delivering both the customers’ orders (which the Cashier will bag for the convenience of the customer) and their sales receipts. 

Cashiers are trained on the job. There are no formal education requirements to become a cashier.

To become a cashier, you’ll need a high school diploma and on-the-job training. You also should have customer service skills, dexterity, stamina, bookkeeping skills, knowledge of database and point of sale (POS) software, and proficiency with cash register, scanner, calculator and other electronics.

Responsibility

Scan or register customers’ purchases

Accept payments from customers and give change and receipts

Bag or wrap customers’ purchases

Process returns and exchanges of merchandise

Answer customers’ questions and provide information about store policies

Help customers sign up for store rewards programs or credit cards

Minimum Education

Pass class 12th is necessary or diploma

Cashiers should have a basic knowledge of mathematics, because they need to be able to make change and count the money in their registers.

The maximum age limit for the candidate applying for the job can also be as less as 25 years. 

Salary

An entry-level Cashier with less than 1 year experience can expect to earn an average total compensation (includes tips, bonus, and overtime pay) of ₹175,407 per year.

To succeed as a Cashier, you should have a strong work ethic and high level of accuracy. You should be responsible, attentive to customer needs, and committed to providing excellent service.

Cashiers should be courteous and attentive to customers while they scan and count items and collect payments. They should be skilled multitaskers with solid math skills. The basic duties of a cashier also require a high level of efficiency and accuracy.
